Four words to remember when the rainbow of Pride fades
Equality, respect, acceptance, and inclusion
Twelve years ago, I sat across a corporate conference table from senior management discussing the concerns of LGBTQ+ employees. Lisa, a lesbian friend and coworker, and I shared our perspectives as members of the LGBTQ+ community. Two years later, our advocacy continued as we led the formation of an LGBTQ+ employee resource group.
This old-school company was changing to better connect with employees, customers, and the wider community. A key focus for the LGBTQ+ employee resource group was educating the workforce on LGBTQ+ employee experiences. The group emphasized the concepts of equality, respect, acceptance, and inclusion to achieve this goal.
Equality
Equality was the cornerstone of the group's mission. This meant ensuring everyone had the same fundamental rights and protections. The group aimed to dismantle unconscious biases toward LGBTQ+ employees. Unlike seeking special privileges, it was leveling the playing field free from hidden prejudices.
Equality is fully participating in all aspects of society with no prejudice or bias. It is putting a photo of your spouse on your desk, including your spouse at happy hour, and sharing your weekend getaway with your loved one.
How would you feel if someone refused to acknowledge you because of something you can't control? Wouldn't you want them to treat you fairly? Equality is just that, showing empathy and understanding of others. Empathy is being a respectful person who makes sure everyone feels welcome, valued, and heard.
Respect
The path to acceptance and inclusion of LGBTQ+ people is respecting their worth as a person. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation. All human beings are unique in some way. Being respectful is valuing, appreciating, and acknowledging the person's individuality.
Respectful dialogue fosters understanding and changes perspectives. By actively listening and encouraging conversation, even with those who disagree, you can create space for growth. "I appreciate your viewpoint, but..." bridges divides and opens doors to productive discussions.
Many people are unclear of the jargon of diversity, inclusion, sexualities, and gender identities. We can help each other avoid assumptions and ensure the use of the right words and pronouns for everyone. By fostering open communication on LGBTQ+ terminology, we create a more welcoming and respectful environment.
Respect grows when you use respectful language. By using terminology that emphasizes collaboration and appreciation for diverse experiences, we promote understanding when talking about LGBTQ+ individuals, their relationships, and their lives.
Acceptance
Acceptance of LGBTQ+ people is where equality comes to life. It is being seen as an equal member of society, free from discrimination or prejudice based on sexual orientation or gender identity. A healthy society thrives when everyone feels safe, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique talents and perspectives.
Acknowledging someone's sexual orientation isn't about accepting a lifestyle choice. It's recognizing that being LGBTQ+ is simply who they are. Sexual orientation is an inherent part of a person’s being, not a chosen behavior. Acknowledge the person, even if those different from you.
LGBTQ+ people simply want to be accepted. All of us can relate to that. This is true in all aspects of life, from where we live and work to how we spend our free time. Our communities are a diverse mix of political, religious, and social views. By fostering peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, we create a harmonious and welcoming environment for all.
Inclusion
Imagine acceptance as opening the door. It allows someone in, but inclusion is inviting them to a seat at the table. Acceptance is a necessary first step, but inclusion creates a space where LGBTQ+ people feel valued, supported, and empowered to participate fully.
Inclusion is recognizing the diversity of people’s backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives and what these differences bring to the table. Being inclusive ensures all are free to share their thoughts and have their voice heard by others.
Unconscious biases and learned barriers that prevent LGBTQ+ people from feeling included must be removed. By creating an inclusive environment through our words and actions, we foster a sense of belonging, acceptance, and respect for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation.
Moving forward
While Pride Month may come to a close, the spirit of Pride endures. It's more than just rainbows, parades, and social media posts. True Pride lives on in the actions of allies who champion equality, respect, acceptance, and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community every day.
These four words hold particular significance for LGBTQ+ individuals, who deserve to be valued and empowered in every aspect of life. Equality isn't a destination, it's a journey paved with respect, acceptance, and a truly inclusive environment.
Finding common ground is key to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. Words like equality, respect, acceptance, and inclusion bridge divides and foster understanding. I encourage you to use them in your conversations. These powerful terms, while thoughtful, can spark positive change and even shift perspectives.
