Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. - Robin Williams
One of the thoughts I shared on my 70th birthday was leaving a legacy of kindness and charity. I strive to be the person who makes a kinder better world. Several years back I came across this Robin Williams quote. I printed, framed, and hung it above my desk. It is a reminder that my pen has the power to spread kindness.
My life has been littered with issues I silently struggled with; something that likely resonates with you. I diligently work to make positive changes and progress. That does not happen overnight. It’s usually through small slow steps. Each step is one closer to winning an inner battle.
Friends and strangers may downplay these small victories with well-meaning words that dismiss my progress. It often starts with “If only you could…”. I believe these people are kind and want to show support. Unfortunately, the words I need are affirmations that move me forward. I am well aware of the “If only I could…”.
I participated in many peer, self-help, and support groups throughout my life. They release emotions and hidden battles within. This happens when people feel they are in a safe place to speak freely with emotions. Internal battles are conquered by bringing them to light and challenging them head-on.
William’s quote is a reminder when listening you must truly hear the person. That means going beyond the spoken words to understand where the words come from. The real message is often hidden. Hear, listen, sense, observe, and feel with kindness in your words.
Being kind is rewarding. Sharing kindness is making your life and the lives of others better, Be kind. It is addictive. It changes the world.
Every Wednesday, I select a quote from my thoughts-to-keep journal. I tune out the outside world for ten minutes to reflect and write about that tidbit of wisdom.
